Awaken Your Wood Series:
In the Wood Element season, we learn to have a clear vision, a solid plan and how to become unstoppable, yet flexible, in the pursuit of realizing your vision.
You Create Your Reality
Do you notice that you get little breadcrumb messages from the universe each day reminding you that you truly are on the right path?
I’ve had unprompted feedback lately from clients, colleagues and friends that kind of sums up “What I do”:
I create order out of chaos and help clients design a path to make it happen.
I recently had a reflection of this when I was called in to support my choir leadership team in creating the process to hire a new director. The team had drawn up a beautiful search document, and the staff was on board, but there was no traction.
There was a clear idea- hire a new director, but no one had created the strategy to actually recruit, hire and train this new director. There was a whole lot of waiting to see, wondering who was making the next move, etc. So the process was stalled.
I held a meeting with the core team and staff, asked some questions to get clarity and alignment on what we were looking for, then offered a clear hiring process, job description, application process, outreach and recruitment process. Within one week, the efforts went from confusion to clarity to action.
It's easy to get excited about an idea. But it takes a different skill set to bring it into reality.
Take Action Toward Your Vision
Nelson Mandela once said, "Action without vision is only passing time. Vision without action is merely daydreaming. But vision with action can change the world."
This is where planning comes in.
When you desire something, it’s great to dream into it, write about it and get a clear vision. But that vision will stay in the land of great ideas until you actually take action.
But, what actions do you need to take?
This is precisely where entrepreneurs get stopped- in not seeing how to get from here to your goal. They often forget, or are unaware that you need to create a strategy and process to achieve your goal.
That process can’t live in your head - it needs to be in a written form. For my campaigns, I use production plans. These simple spreadsheets lay out every element of the vision and each task required to make it real.
In the dance between feminine creativity (Intuition, creation, dreaming) and masculine linear action (Direction, focus, boundaries), having specific processes and systems create clarity and flow, so your dream can be realized.
Here are some of my favorite planning tools:
Production Spreadsheet - Use an Excel or Google Spreadsheet to outline each task to produce your plan. There are also programs such as Smartsheets that give you solid project management tools.
Mindmapping - When you have alot of moving elements and want to get a visual, use a mindmap or organizational chart to capture the relationships. See some examples here: www.mindmapping.com
Brainstorm in a mastermind group or with a friend - I do power days with a friend nearly every week to get my head around my current priorities and to update my plans.
Create a storyboard - Similar to a mindmap, the story board can be a roadmap that outlines the process and the content that you want to develop. You can use a whiteboard or magnetic board if you want a 3D visual, or there are interesting software programs (like Scrivener) to help you see all of the pieces in one place.
These are just a handful of ways to get your ideas into a written or visual form. You can also follow traditional business or marketing plan outlines, Gantt charts that help you see how to prioritize which tasks at the right time.
Key elements of your plan will include what to accomplish- break down each idea into smaller steps, then assign accountability and a timeline. Get to know your preferred planning style so that you can adopt a planning system that is sustainable and keeps you motivated.
If you have a team, you may want to use a shared drive such as Google Drive or Dropbox, or a project management system such as Asana, Basecamp or ZenDesk.
It's time for your Big Vision to live fully.
The unstoppable part of you needs to have a clear direction. Right now is a crucial time to create the strategy, so that when the full force of the Fire Element comes, with many opportunities for collaboration and outreach, you'll be confident in what you have to offer and how you want to play.
One more thing, your plan doesn't have to be perfect. Just get your ideas out of your head and into a format so that you can start to see what actions are next for you.
